A few general rules of dressing

  1. If you wouldn’t buy it at full price, do not buy it just because it's on sale. Chances are it won’t get used.
  2. If you haven't worn it in a year, it's time to let it go.
  3. Don't always wear black. There are other dark colors that are more interesting, such as navy, brown or charcoal.
  4. If the outfit shows up before you, put it back.
  5. Jeans can be your best friend. Take your time to find a fit that works for your shape, don't just buy anything.

If you like long or knee high boots but have thin calves, you know how frustrating it can be to find boots that fit snug, and not loose on the calf area.

Here are a couple things you can do:

  1. You can take them to a leather goods or shoe repair store. Ask them if they can take a couple inches off, and put back the zipper. This is especially easy with suede boots. I do this all the time.
  2. Wear ankle boots or the kind that comes up just a few inches higher than your ankle and lower than your calves. They are very fashionable and will look snug. Ankle boots will also work great if you have thicker calves and higher boots won’t fit your calves.

Dress the biggest part of your body first. Worry about the rest later.

For example, if you have larger hips and you struggle with finding the right pants or skirt because the waist never seems to fit perfectly, Choose the size that fits your hips, the waist can be taken in by a tailor.

When choosing colors, remember that lighter colors give you the appearance of looking larger and closer, darker colors give you the appearance of looking smaller and further.

It’s that simple. So if you would like to make an area of your body look smaller, dress that part in a darker color, and choose a lighter color for the area you would like to emphasize.

When shopping, always consider proportion

If you're shopping for a dress with patterns, make sure the patterns are in proportion with your body.

For example, if you are petite, go for smaller patterns, along with smaller jewelry, smaller shoe buckles and straps. Do the opposite if you are taller or have a bigger structure. Go for larger patterns, chunkier jewelry and bigger shoe buckles and straps.

Same thing goes for men. If you're a guy with a smaller build, consider wearing shirts with smaller, narrower collars than wider ones. If you have a bigger build, then you'll look better in larger, wider collars.

Remember it's all about the fit and proportion.
